Unlike other CDN vendors that depend on third-party technologies for key components in their CDN infrastructure, Limelight continues to develop and optimize the full stack of components inhouse, giving it a key competitive edge. In order to enable end-users to stream content at higher quality, while speeding up downloads, Limelight completed a major infrastructure upgrade in early 2018, globally rolling out an update to its EdgePrism OS that positively impacts throughput, security, and quality of streams.
In 2018, Limelight introduced the industry’s first sub-second live video streaming capabilities that use Web Real-Time Communications (WebRTC)-based User Datagram Protocol (UDP) to provide global video delivery to anywhere in the world in less than one second. This new realtime streaming service reduces the latency of live streaming so online content providers can offer interactive capabilities integrated with the online video.
Limelight beefed up their Video Delivery services product portfolio by adding an integrated Digital Rights Management solution. To enable their customers to tackle revenue losses from online piracy, Limelight’s multi-DRM On the Fly solution was launched with the aim of simplifying encryption and reducing costs related to storage and management of encrypted content by adding encryption as content is requested by viewers. The solution included server
based licensing and software and implementation services, giving customers a complete DRM solution with full implementation support minus the need for complex integrations with multiple vendors.
Limelight also continues to make their video delivery services more robust with greater enhancements as well as added features and functionality. It added HTML player customizations and simplified media management to its Online Video Platform, as well as live to VOD recording capabilities and reduced delivery latency of HLS and MPEG-DASH video streams to as low as 3 seconds.
