Why subs can’t afford to leave data behind

The Real Reasons Specialty Contractors Need to Own Their Record Set and Project Data

When it comes to data ownership in the construction industry, subcontractors are often forgotten. Unless the general contractor (GC) or owner requires it, most subcontractors don’t have their own data collection tools in place and simply use the GC’s system of record. This ebook shows why subcontractors need to own their record set and data so that they have a single source of accurate and up-to-date data to access while in the field and after project closeout.

“Our mission is to exceed expectations through embracing innovation and harnessing the full potential of our people. Autodesk Construction Cloud enables this as project teams have information at their fingertips to operate complex projects more efficiently,” says Matthew Bien-Izowski, Managing Director at BN Electrical.

Data portability and accuracy is essential for those working on a construction project, including sub contractors. It ensures that everyone is working from the same information and it promotes transparency across teams. Typically, however, it is general contractors who own and track data over the lifecycle of the project, which can leave gaps in information for subcontractors who are completing the work in the field. To maximize productivity and efficiency, it is vital that subcontractors own their record set and project data so that they can ensure information is up-to-date and visible to everyone on the jobsite.

Currently in the construction industry, data management practices leave something to be desired. Many different solutions are available, and often, many of them are used during every step of the project. However, the tools often don’t integrate with one another, which makes it hard to ensure the collected data is accessible and useful to all teams involved. This can lead to gaps when not all of the data is transferred from one software system to another or when the data is not properly captured by those in the field.
